How Our Minds Keep Us Stuck—And How We Can Break Free

I’ve always been fascinated by how our minds work—probably because I see every day just how powerful they truly are. Recently, I came across an article that really resonated with me, reminding me of something I witness all the time in my practice: so many of our fears, stress responses, and habits aren’t things we consciously choose. They’re deeply wired patterns in our subconscious.

Think about it—have you ever had a fear or reaction that felt completely out of your control? Maybe your heart races at the thought of getting on a plane, or you feel overwhelmed by stress in situations that logically shouldn’t be so daunting. It’s frustrating, right? Consciously, you know there’s no real danger, yet your body reacts as if there is.

Why Does This Happen?

Our subconscious mind is designed to protect us. It stores past experiences and creates patterns to help us navigate the world. The problem is, sometimes those patterns get wired in a way that no longer serves us. A fear that made sense at one point in your life—maybe after a turbulent flight or a stressful public speaking experience—sticks around long after the actual threat is gone.

And because these reactions come from the subconscious, logic alone isn’t enough to override them. You can tell yourself “I know flying is safe” a hundred times, but if your subconscious has linked flying to danger, your body will react accordingly.

The Good News: The Mind is Adaptable
